Food for thought not available at chomps! :p

What is image? What is our true self? In all humans, these two characteristics overlap naturally. The difference between all of us is the extent of overlapping. In the words of Eric, the people who are strong enough to be different are those who don't bother upkeeping an image for others. i.e. the overlapping is nearly 100%. Personally, I think this is what we should all strive to achieve, although we inevitably fall short all the time. Still, it serves as a good goal in life doesn't it? To keep an image is to show a facade that keeps up with what people think we should be. Why do we do this? A sign of weakness perhaps? That we don't have confidence in ourselves. Our worry of not being accepted. I guess once that barrier's overcome, we will not be persuaded to keep an image. Normally in schooling context, this would apply to 'uncool' people who try to do things that make them 'cooler'. But at the end of the day, it is they themselves who decide that they're 'uncool'. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's a matter of how strong you believe in your own opinion, i.e. whether your opinion counts to yourself.

On to the issue of acceptance, I guess environment really plays a part. If one were surrounded by a group of highly judgemental beings, then upholding a certain image would definitely be inevitable. There are no exceptions, just different circumstances. And I would like to showcase my class as an example, at least among the guys. We accept who we are with our differences. That's why we're able to exist so comfortably with each other and forsake our supposed image. The stuff we do is so extremely retarded but we still do it. I think it's because being retarded is accepted amongst us. Now, doesn't this whole acceptance thing comes full circle? People want to be 'cool' so that they can be accepted. Acceptance is so important to a human being. Simple as that. By the way it's ranked second in Maslow's hierarchy of needs if I'm not wrong.

Carefree-ness. Why can't we be carefree? Not only is it due to society being judgemental, but it is also because we ourselves set our own boundaries! This is none other than being sensitive and tactful in different situations. Be it towards guys or girls, we have to be sensitive, perhaps more so when dealing with girls in my opinion. Simply because girls tend to pick up more things like body language and the way sentences are phrased and ideas put across. Guess that is one of the defining characteristics of a girl.

So we should think first before we act right? Thinking is free. And the benefits derived are great. So why not think first? Actually there are two schools of thought here and it really depends on which school of thought u subscribe to. On one hand you want to be sensitive to others, on the other, you want to express what you really think. Then again, vetting what you say is being tactful. And the reason behind tact is a cost-benefit analysis where the marginal costs of saying something is greater than the marginal benefits. So at the end of the day the other party receives an altered and delayed (depends on how fast you think on your feet) reaction. Guess it all boils down to whether we want to incur the wrath of others by speaking what we think, and hurting them in the process. I suppose these are times when the truth should be left alone and uncovered, when lies or half truths are welcome. Perhaps the phrase "zong yan ni er li yu bing, liang yao ku kou li yu xing" does not always apply yea?

I don't think upkeeping an image is worth it now, and it will never be. We should all live as ourselves and not try to be something we aren't just to be accepted in society. We should all believe in ourselves! What we are should be what we portray in the first place so there's no need to have an image. If we all subscribed to a certain image, where then would the diversity be? (It's like Singapore's education system. Demeaning as it may sound, we are mere products of the Singapore factory, all churned out according to a certain mould decided by the government.)

To sum everything up, I leave you with this quote from "The Talented Mr. Ripley"

It's better to be a real nobody than a fake somebody.

Supposed to be long but became short post.

The past few days have been a blast! :) And it was spent with none other than 6A haha. Perhaps it's because the end is near, with schooling coming to a short close, (maybe not for the girls), but the tendency to reflect on a class outing has never been greater. Albeit fajoo and I paid a $18.50 entrance fee to get to east coast, the outing was definitely worth much more than that.

I guess what makes our time spent together so enjoyable is the fact that throughout the years (1.75), we have begun to accept everyone for who they are (as what umay has said). Add that to all the wise cracks, and repeated jokes (some good some bad, AGAIN AND AGAIN, till they all become bad), and of course our unique sense of humour, and everyday is a blast! I daresay that the jokes and fooling around is what I look forward to everyday I come to school! (omg i sense a "no-lifer" coming up lol) Heh such is the extent I truly enjoy our class's sense of humour that I can imagine what you guys would say if you were here hahah. And I like how we're all so childish or would you say young at heart haha. Guess that would explain why gerbert was busy planting pool balls into people's pockets that night lol.

It seems like ive run outta inspiration to continue my post. Anyway thanks to all those who walked me home last night! My stomach was really feeling queasy so thanks! :) Hahah to the next class outing dudes~ *cheers*

<3

today, as i was watching our classmates play frisbee (i was being anti-social, lazy or emo.. u choose it), it yet again struck me that my classmates are really an endearing bunch.

i've liked all the classes i've been in. however, there's something different being in 6a. in lower sec, my class was rather clique-y. the individual cliques didn't really have much to do with the other cliques. ok, there were "affiliated" cliques haha. like.. zan's clique got along pretty well with the clique shiting was in (the bimbo clique lol). and -coughs- me, being so likeable, got along with people from different cliques. it's undeniable, though, that my class was pretty much segregated.

in upper sec, i loved my classmates too. yet again, i got along fine with most, if not everyone. but the same can't be said for other classmates. my class was known to be the paikia/high prof pple class. but obviously, not everyone can fit into that description. while the class was more united than in lower sec, there was a segregation between the "cool" pple and those who are less so, by normal standards. even ignoring bitching amongst groups (i mean, it's inevitable that people don't get along, i guess), the less attention-seeking few (not to say that the rest were attention-seeking in any negative manner) had little to do with the rest and any communication between the groups were tentative and somewhat forced.

even in primary school, there was at least a certain individual who was completely not included in the class. -ahem- he who shall not be named but whose name can be guessed easily.

on the other hand, in 6a, i find that after 1+ years, the atmosphere is one of acceptance. regardless of what reputation we came with, our looks (or lack-thereof), intelligence, sports aptitude, proficiency in english haha.. regardless of how quiet or noisy we are, or our sexual orientations -coughs-jenhan-coughs-.. regardless of whatever makes us who we are, the class has come to accept every single one of us. at least, that is what it seems to me.

things had not always been easy for some of us in this class. it's heartwarming to see that after everything, 6a has evolved to become what we are today. a class where we all belong. we can't all be close to everyone, but at the same time, it seems to me that at least a basic level of comfort exists amongst everyone else. from what i can see, everyone's happy to help each other out, we are fine talking to one another.. our class is just. happy. somehow, i get that feeling from it.

i have my horrible mood swings and hammie did tell me before that when i am in a bad mood i'm completely untouchable. in fact, i think i'm a lot harder to get along with in jc than i was earlier on. but after everything, be it losing my temper (usually at zhu sorry), punching hammie, dao-ing some people when i was in no mood to talk and all sorts of bratty behaviour, i still feel that if and when i need/want them to be, the class is here for me. and i would appreciate it if you do not correct this belief of mine, if it happens to be wrong haha.

yes, things had not always been nice and dandy. no one's perpetually happy and some feelings might have had been hurt along the way. but by this point, most of us know that teasings are not meant to hurt. most has been taken as amusement, even for the person who is being teased. a smile (some more gay than others), a laugh and perhaps feigned anger, some eye-rolling. but no one really gets offended, right? at least, not often.

we took awhile to get used to everyone. but by now, i'm willing to bet that everyone is glad to be part of this class. it is where we can behave as we like, "image" disregarded. a somewhat childish, somewhat naive environment, but nevertheless, an environment where we are able to live just like that, without having to put up false appearances, without having to worry about the impression we give the rest of our classmates.

i love 6a (: despite me being anti-social at times, pangsehing the class AT TIMES (not always lor).. and despite being told that the guys were laughing at my extremely normal and un-laughable (in my opinion) tag, despite suannings that i'm fat, despite the horrible guys trying to induce me to fall when i'm cycling... i really do love 6a.

Our world needs more <3

Written yesterday. Then realised hammy posted. So i decided to post today and not steal his thunder =P.

(<3 = love. <3 is the shape of a heart)

Sian everybody seems so busy mugging that no one updates liao. Even the tag board so dead. T.T. Sooo..... i decided to take some time off to contribute something =)

Wahhhh emo title sia. Actually, i couldnt really think of anything else that is non-emo, or less emo, so i decided to stick with it. And i think its quite cool lor, with the heart shape =D. (Side note: Once, a great guru (incidentally we all know him) told me that 6a guys can NEVER be emo, we look/sound damn funny when we want to.... errm... be in touch with our sensitive side. haha. But thats beside the point. Im NOT gonna be a emo SNAG here.)

Ok. Heres why i put the title. /Startstory Last week, when i was walking home from school, i saw a car trying to turn into a side road. At the same time, a van wanted to turn out from that side road. I mean, u see this like at least 34621781 times a day right? So, i think, in the land of 4 million smiles, where everyone loves each other(O.O), what can happen from this infinitesly insignificant event?? The car even signalled and slowed down to let the van turn out first before it tried to turn in. (Refer to map below)

All goes according to the natural order of things... UNTIL..... The van driver suddenly stopped and wound down his window. Kaypoh me saw this, so i stopped walking and looked to see whats wrong.

Apparantly, the van driver was DAMN pissed. when he wound down the window, he started shouting at the car driver. "WAH LAO!! U WANT TO TURN THEN TURN LAH!! STOP WHAT STOP?!?! STOP FOR WHAT? U KNOW HOW TO DRIVE ORNOT?? NEXT TIME WANT TO TURN JUST TURN!!"

W...T...F... wah lao eh. for gawd's sakes. that guy stopped to let YOU go leh. and u still kaopeh him for... NOT not giving way to you?? WTF??? Luckily the car driver was too smart to say anything back. he just wound back up his window and drove off looking bemused.

Incidents like this make me think how much of an a**hole other people are. AND how really stupid and obnoxious Singaporeans can be. I mean, this is like.. the pinnacle of obnoxiousness. Scolding someone for being nice to you. -_- The IMF people should have seen this, to see the REAL Singapore. /Endstory

Hmm... wasnt too emo right? haha. Ok im off to drown myself in more econs mcq, and listen to jay chou's new album. Its damn damn damn nice!!!

cyaz~

P.S. Anyways, the answer for the identity of A for the chem question, (the one where u add I2 and Br2 to get precipitates) is sodium thiosulphate, i think. Jquek mentioned it when i met him at the busstop. Didnt know what he was talking about until i started thinking about it. I dont think its Na2So4. GG pawned.

haha...so witty

hey guys... was watching sportscenter. those guys are..quite witty huh...

Finland 1- Portugal 1

presenter 1 : nuno gomez recently saved the portuguese from a near loss to an unfavoured finnish side

presenter 2 : yes, in the dying minutes of the first half, a terrific pass to johansson was met by an equally
brilliant finish

presenter 2 : here, the finnish supporters are seen vigorously cheering their team on

*short pause as they realise the pun*

presenter 2 : haha...theres a lot of finnish today.

presenter 1 : *giggles*

presenter 2: the finnish really appreciated the finish there....haha

presenter 1: haha

presenter 1: later in the second half, however, nuno gomez latched on to a terrific through pass and made no mistake with the finish

presenter 2 : mumbles something abt finnish

presenter 1: giggles (obviously has a crush on him)

hahhahahaa....thos sportscenter guys are retarded. and if any nolifers aka hammy would like to dispute my match commentary let me put in this disclaimer: all commentary is only an approximation of what i vaguely remember from the show

haha...so witty

Physics Joke

Alright my turn to tell a joke hahaha.

As lectured by Prof. Nicholas

1a) Define moment of a couple. [2]

Moment of a couple is defined as the product of one of the force and the perpendicular distance between them.

1b) Define product of a couple. [2]

Product of a couple is defined as the product of one of the moments and the negligible perpendicular distance between the couple.

Now that's physics for you! :p

jokes

this was the winning joke from an online joke competition in which there were over 2 million votes(taken from laughlab.co.uk)

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?"

not all too good eh? but since its a grp of scientists doing they have to have some kind of analysis on WHY the joke is funny. (a bit like fajoo's book dont you think?)

"This joke is interesting because it works across many different countries, appeals to men and women, and young and old alike. Many of the jokes submitted received higher ratings from certain groups of people, but this one had real universal appeal. Also, we find jokes funny for lots of different reasons – they sometimes make us feel superior to others, reduce the emotional impact of anxiety-provoking events, or surprise us because of some kind of incongruity. The hunters joke contains all three elements – we feel superior to the stupid hunter, realise the incongruity of him misunderstanding the operator and the joke helps us to laugh about our concerns about our own mortality."

hmmmm, i think the explanation was funnier haha

in fact i think that some of the other jokes were actually quite good

uk's top joke
A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: “That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: “The driver just insulted me!” The man says: “You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you.”

USA's top joke
A man and a friend are playing golf one day at their local golf course. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer. His friend says: “Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You truly are a kind man.” The man then replies: “Yeah, well we were married 35 years.”

unfortunately too, the belgians have a poor sense of humour

Belgium's top joke (omg i dont believe it)
Why do ducks have webbed feet?To stamp out fires.
Why do elephants have flat feet?To stamp out burning ducks

guess none of them are THAT funny after all, but somehow jokes that are not mean or insulting or crude do not seem to work.

and chem prelim 2004 is very hard. haha
