Re: Supervisor shouted at student in public 8/3/06Regarding what had happened at Novena MRT during the Apex Day Care Centre flag day, I have to say that there are some discrepancies between Jun An’s account of what and what had actually happened on that day. One: I am the person in charge and not the one whom you claimed to “shout” at students. He was a adult volunteer who came down to help with the flag day. Not for CIP hours of course. Two: our specific instructions were not “not lose the tins” nor “you have to be back by 1 pm”. Our instructions were: 1) try to collect as much as you can, preferably around half a tin, to guarantee that you get your CIP hours as the teachers will be deciding on whether to give you your CIP hours based on how much you have collected. 2) write your name and class on the tins for easy recognition during collection.I suppose the instructions are clear and easy enough for a person of your intelligence to understand. We did not even mention “not to lose the cans” nor “be back at 1” because we trust that you would not be mart enough to lose the cans and we give you the liberty to clock extra hours if you wish. Apparently you have not been listening to instructions.Three: our volunteer did not threatened to take away your CIP hours. We do not have the right to do so. We told you that if you do not collect enough money, your teachers may not give you your CIP hours. They have specifically requested us to count every student’s collection and report the numbers back. This is to facilitate them not to give and CIP hours to those students who do not put in enough effort to selling flags. Hundreds of man hours are wasted as a result of counting the money for you people. However I really thank you and your friends for collecting so little money and making our job easier.Four: our volunteer did not shout at any of you in public. He merely raised his voice in order to explain what he has been telling you all the time while trying to speak over a dozen badly dressed students (your classmates I suppose) crowding around and arguing with him.Five: our volunteer did not write anything on the recording sheet. In fact, he was not given any task for recording things on the recording sheet. I assigned someone else to do that task. Moreover, the remarks are for our own reference while counting money and recording the amount students have collected. What we write on the remarks column have absolutely nothing to do with you. We will counting every single tin at the end of the day and will be sending the finalized recording sheet with the amount every student collected back to the school.Six: our volunteer did not “force your classmate o estimate the value of coins inside (the tin)” nor did he “kept shouting at her”. He simply told her that he doubt the teacher will be happy with the amount that she had collected and might not get the hours and asked her does she think she can get the hours with whatever amount she has collected. Again, our volunteer did not write anything down under the remarks column. You said that “you had tried your best and you should not be blamed if the tins were not full”. I want to question you whether you have really tried your best and put in the effort when students from SCGS and Crescent Girls’ from Novena station are able to come back with full tins, and with smiles on their faces. I must also mention that there are other adult volunteers who are able to collect 3 full tins in 5 hours. Can you provide me with a valid reason for your nearly empty tin? Some returned with tins so empty we can tell how many coins there are inside just by shaking it. One of the members in your group collected only $0.90. I remember your group. And I remembered your group very well. Do you think you have done your best? Do you think you deserve any CIP hours? Do you think you have any right to complain about out volunteer “shouting” at you when you cannot even listen to simple instructions? It is not because the girls from SCGS are better looking than you. It is not because they can find places with rich people. It is not because they naturally attract people to donate more than you. It is because they have the right attitude and they persevere that they are able to come back with full tins. They are the ones that deserve the CIP hours and our respect. Not those that slack around waiting for time to pass by at the fast food restaurant just upstairs of Novena MRT station waiting for the sign out time to arrive. You said that “you find it most distressing to see a grown-up man making a defenseless girl in public”. I certainly find it most disappointing to see a group of badly dressed students pushing a kind volunteer to his limits and “shouting” profanities at him in public, letting down their school’s image.I shall not mention any names or schools but I’ll like to comment on schools making CIP hours compulsory for students. I feel that CIP should never be made compulsory. It is up to the students themselves whether they want to serve and contribute to the community. The once sacred act of serving the community through CIP has now been abused by students for the sake of getting CIP hours and having something to fill up their testimonials. CIP should be for students who truly want to help contribute and serve the community. It is a respectable act and we should look up to these people who sacrifice their valuable time to participate in these activities out of their love for the community. However, people who sign up for CIPs and conveniently go for a movie and a nice lunch before signing out should not be forgiven. They do not deserve any CIP hours nor any respect from us simply because they do not treat the community and themselves with any respect. As a student myself I feel terribly disappointed at many of the performances of the students who come back with almost empty can. I’ll rather them stay at home and sleep to coming here and wasting both our and your time.I hope that the writer of this article and his friends can be more responsible in the future and learn to show more respect to the community and to himself. The human race prospers because we are creatures that live in a tightly bounded society and we care for each other. We’ll never advance if all we care about is ourselves.pls note this one is jus draft. super tired when typing this. so if got broken english dun laugh at me haha.
